The Mitchell Scholarship

George J. Mitchell Scholars, friends of the US-Ireland Alliance, and members of the Alliance’s Cultúr Club gathered at the Cauldron, a new pub on Stone Street in Manhattan, owned by Mitchell Scholar Matt Cortland. Matt also has a successful Cauldron in London (https://thecauldron.io). The Cauldron uses science and technology to bring the magic from fantasy books to life in an immersive, interactive experience.

Trina Vargo, founder of the Alliance and Mitchell Scholarship program, welcomed guests and thanked those who supported the evening, including Bobby Mulcare, Managing Director of New Mountain Capital and member of the Mitchell Class of 2005. Cillian O’Bradaigh, Seamus O’Cleireacain, John O’Donoghue, and Owen Rodgers also supported the evening.

Matt spoke about how he came up with the idea for the Cauldron during his time as a Mitchell Scholar at the Dublin Institute of Technology in 2015.

On a more serious note, Azza Cohen, Mitchell Class of 2017, paid tribute to Lyra McKee, the young Northern Ireland journalist who was recently murdered in Derry. Lyra helped Azza with her dissertation about the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
