The Mitchell Scholarship
Class of 2025 Mitchell Scholars arrives on the island
21 September 2024. It was great to welcome the 25th class of Mitchell Scholars to the island. We hope it is not the last class. Their arrival activities were supported by Strong Roots, Elkstone, and DFHERIS. In my remarks, I spoke about why we have paused future selections as well as the value of the program for the island. https://us-irelandalliance.org/news/remarks-to-welcome-25th-class-of-mitchell-scholars
This piece about the Mitchell program by Keith Duggan was in the Irish Times on the day of our reception; https://www.irishtimes.com/ireland/education/2024/09/20/mitchell-scholars-programme-faces-closure-unless-reliable-funding-can-be-secured/
For reasons I mentioned in my remarks, it is interesting to consider that article and my remarks in conjunction with Justine McCarthy’s piece in the same paper: https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2024/09/20/its-time-we-stopped-obsessing-about-being-universally-loved-because-those-days-are-gone/ The relationship is fading fast and anyone who would tell you otherwise probably has some swampland in Florida they could sell you .
The Scholars visited Glasnevin Cemetery and learned about Irish history. They visited the Gravediggers Pub, walked the Killiney and Dalkey Hill loop, and a reception was held in their honor at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin. Photos from the reception and from their meeting with Senator Mitchell a week later at the Westbury Hotel in Dublin: https://www.flickr.com/photos/usirelandalliance/albums/72177720320504083/
We look forward to making sure this class has a fantastic year and we are grateful to those people who are supportive.
