2009-2010 Scholars
Mitchell Scholars Program
The Mitchell Scholars Program is a national competitive fellowship sponsored by the US-Ireland Alliance. The Mitchell Scholars Program, named to honor former US Senator George Mitchell’s pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to public service and community. Twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on three criteria: academic excellence, leadership, and a sustained commitment to service and community. The Mitchell Scholars Program provides tuition, housing, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend. Download a printable brochure.
How To Apply
The application cycle for the Class of '12 will open spring 2010. Applications and procedures can change year to year so be sure to use the correct application form. Prospective applicants are urged to study the Frequently Asked Questions and the profiles of past Scholars to learn about the program, the selection process, and the qualities we seek in a Mitchell Scholar. On the basis of the application submissions and semi-final interviews, approximately twenty finalists are invited for interviews with the Selection Committee, which will be held this year on Friday, 19 November and Saturday, 20 November 2010.
Because the Mitchell program has only twenty national finalists for twelve awards, we expect that a finalist will be committed to accept a position in the Mitchell Scholars Program if offered. The Mitchell Scholars Program includes support for only one year of study at a university on the island of Ireland. Those who prefer a multi-year academic scholarship should apply for other fellowship programs wich offer multi-year awards. Applicants must be prepared to declare their priority interest in the Mitchell Scholarship if invited to be a finalist.
